We will always remember |
| Why an Emu Farm ?
Sometimes, I am asking myself this same question. But then, when I see situations like the one below, there are no more questions, only smiles. |
We were digging a waterline for a new hydrant and we had plenty of "helpers". They checked out the tools, wondered why the tractor can stick his neck (the bucket) so much higher than they can and made in general a lovely nuisance out of themselves. Our
Granddaughter Anna (8 years
old at the time) was trying to keep them organized and out of our way, but did not have much luck. One wore our Grandson's shirt for about 1 1/2 hours. It was just a nice, sunny and interesting day and the work was flowing along fine (with much help from my grandson Sebastian
(17 years old).
Emus are nosy and like company, but not necessarily like to be petted. They like treats,
berries, grapes, certain leaves and grasses. Te Emus
eat treats out of our hands. |
|
But let us tell you the whole story:
My wife Anne and I, Barney, moved after my retirement from Long Island , New York to Fork Union, Virginia. When we were halfway settled, my wife decided, that she would like a pair of Emus as pets. |
| So, I started building a run-in shed and a 35' X 110' fenced in area near the house. We started looking for birds and naturally found a nice young pair, which we took home to all our other "pets". The chicken, the ducks and the Newfoundland dog did not take as much space as the Emus, but all together it was quite a menagerie. A year went by and we felt the Emus needed some company, so we got another pair for the new run next to the first one. It was terrific,
that I built the run-in shed big enough so we could divide it. |
| More Emus came after and well, we think you know the rest of the story.
That is, why we now have a small Emu farm with about 80 Emus, 12 Bantam chicken, 4 Ducks,
up to a half dozen Peafowl., a cat and a Newfoundland puppy. |

| What is needed to set up an Emu run? |
| Money, patience (time), muscle and a lot of love for the animals and not necessarily in that order. |
| On our place the minimum area for a pair of emus is 25' X 100' (50X100 could take 6 birds, if you want to save space). The run-in shed is at least 8' x 8' for a pair. Shed and fencing is the highest expense. |
| We recommend 5' high chain link fencing with a bar or board on top, although heavy gage welded fencing may do. In every paddy we have trees, grass and clover. The trees for protection and the grass and clover for forage. |
A large pail of water every day per pair and naturally Emu feed. You can buy special Emu Pellets at Southern States or several other good feed stores. We have the feed specially milled for us
(using our own formula at Augusta Coop). The rest is TLC.
